Responsibilities

The VA Northern California Health Care System is seeking an experienced Physical Therapist to perform patient evaluations, provide treatment and documentation, and provide patient/family education regarding rehabilitative care at the McClellan Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic located in Sacramento, CA. This therapist must have knowledge, skill, and ability to interact with and provide treatment to patients from young adulthood through geriatric age and be able to fulfill their age specific needs. The incumbent is a licensed physical therapist who serves as a subject matter expert and role model for other physical therapy personnel in evaluation and treatment of patients in the rehabilitation area. This individual will be expected to supervise physical therapy assistants when applicable. This therapist must also:

  • Measure, fit and instruct patients for use of complex adaptive equipment and assistive devices and justify need for all adaptive equipment and assistive device requests.

  • Independently develop appropriate treatment plans and goals with emphasis on acute and chronic medical rehabilitation and perform a full range of PT treatment procedures, modifying the treatment according to the patient's response to PT intervention.

  • Assume responsibility (under the direction of the Chief of Physical Therapy) for program development and refinements within the specialty areas of acute, subacute and chronic care rehabilitation. This is to include the development of acute, subacute-care and chronic guidelines and protocols.

Registration – Current, full, active and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

Preferred Experience: *The Incumbent must fully demonstrate knowledge of contemporary and evidence based Physical Therapy practice and ability to apply clinically appropriate assessment techniques and treatment interventions to address human pathophysiology and dysfunctions. He/she must possess ability to serve as a consultant for health care providers regarding the delivery of care within Orthopedic and NeuroRehab area of Physical Therapy, especially working with the veteran population at the Outpatient Physical Therapy setting.*

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations:

*GS-07: *None beyond the basic requirements.

*GS-09: *In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidate must have: 1) At least 1 year of post-graduate progressively responsible experience equivalent to the next lower grade; or 2) a master's degree in physical therapy or a directly related field.

In addition to meeting the experience or educational requirements for this grade level, the candidate must fully demonstrate the following KSAOs:

1) Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, kinesiology, psychology, pathophysiology and surgical procedures as they relate to human function.

2) Knowledge and ability to apply clinically appropriate assessment techniques and treatment interventions to address human pathophysiology and dysfunction.

3) Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other healthcare professions.

*GS-11: *In addition to meeting the basic requirements, 1) completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the next lower grade; or 2) 3 years of progressively higher level education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in physical therapy or a directly related field.

In addition to meeting the experience or educational requirements for this grade level, the candidate must fully demonstrate the following KSAOs:

1) Knowledge of contemporary and evidence-based PT practice.

2) Ability to interpret clinician prescriptions and referrals.

3) Ability in communicating, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professions to facilitate the multidisciplinary treatment process.

4) Skill in utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide direct patient care.

5) Knowledge of clinical signs and symptoms to make appropriate referrals for further medical attention/assessment as indicated.
